    MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY
I’ve just completed a year as Club Secretary and it’s certainly been a very busy and productive 12 months. We’ve continued to improve facilities at the club, activities and membership are increasing and the future is bright!

However, there is one aspect that is of concern to me and that is the negative behaviour from a small section of members that caused us problems over the last year.

We had five reported incidents of aggressive and confrontational behaviour during the last 12 months. These resulted in one member of staff being dismissed, one member of staff leaving by mutual agreement, one club member being issued with a formal reprimand, two club members asked to watch their behaviour over the next six months and just this year one member being suspended, pending any appeal.

All these incidents could have been avoided if the people concerned had chosen to defuse the situation rather than escalate it. What was needed was patience and maturity rather than the playground mentality exhibited.

We are a private members club, we normally all know or get to know each other, so my request to all members and staff is that we always show respect and patience to each other and if the occasional disagreement occurs defuse the situation, walk away, speak to the bar staff, just use some common sense. If we all take this approach, hopefully these types of incidents will become a thing of the past – Thank you.

Whilst writing, I would also like to mention the increase in persistent foul language and shouting which is now occurring in the club. With the changing world, it is inevitable that swearing is on the increase, but I would ask members, including committee members, both past and present, to be mindful of other people present in the club and to do their best to temper the use of bad language.

Shouting in the club is something we’ve never really experienced before and is not welcome.

In closing, I felt that I had to let you know my feelings on this matter. We are a private members club, different from the local pubs. I see us as a peaceful haven, a local sanctuary where members can feel safe and welcome and where they can relax and escape the rigours of the outside world.

    Thank you

    Sharon Jones
    Club Secretary
